I am currently using a Slingerland 20 inch bass drum with a 12 inch mounted tom and a 16 inch floor tom. Anyone else using this combo? I didnt think I would like it but I am getting used to it. I have the mounted tom tuned a little on the low side and the floor tom tuned a little higher. I kinda like the set up.
Anyone using this set up??? Last viewed: 0 seconds ago
I'm currently playing my 60's Stewart kit with that configuration. I like it alot, considering I use to always play the standard 12,13,16,14 snare & 22 BD set up. I like having my ride where the 13 tom would normally be set up.
Cheers

1980`s Ludwig Coliseum Piano Black 8x14 snare

1970`s John Grey Capri Aquamarine Sparkle 5x14 snare

Yea, I agree, I like the ride right in front of me next to the mounted tom. I had several 20-12-14, a 22-13-16 and a couple of 18-12-14's. I fooled around with the tuning and got the sound I like with the 12 tom tom and the 16 inch floor. With some of my sets, the sound was too close between the mounted tom and the floor tom.
I have a Rogers kit in those sizes. I do prefer 14" toms as they are easier to transport, but the 16 sounds so good.
I've been using that setup as well lately. Kinda of a cool mash-up: older 20" Rogers Blue Onyx with the 12" and 16" Black Strata 9/72s. For some reason, I know it's only 2", but the 20" is so much easier to transport and takes up less room, which is nice on the tiny stages I mainly play out on.

I love that set up. I think one can cover a lot of styles with the 20/12/16 set up.
My first kit, 1983 Ludwig Rocker? (it has the classic lugs and 4ply maple shell) 22,12,13,16 ..now in black oyster pearl. I still have it
Stop Sign USA Gretsch (80's), black nitron jasper shell 22,12,13,16
1995 Fibes Austin,Texas Badge (original owner) 22,10,12,16,18 in natural wood
USA 2007 Rosewood Gretsch 22,13,16 w/12inch 70's Rosewood Gretsch tom
My first kit was a 12/16/20. It was the only kit I had for about 10 years. The sizes just felt right to me, and was very versatile.
I love the 12/16/20 combination! Here's my 1967 Slingerland kit in those sizes. For all your Rogers fans out there, the Headliner was one of the most popular kits...12/16/20. Drum on!!!
yea!
i'm currently playing a 1965 Rogers headliner set (12/16/20)
before that i was playing a 1965 Ludwig downbeat set (12/14/20)
to be honest, the 14" floor really wasn't doing it for me.
i might of had it tunned too high, but it just didn't have the "umph" that i think a floor tom should have.
i'm using a 1957 WFL superclassic with my Rogers set and it really works well together. all though i'm still on the hunt for a matching 5x14 wood Powertone.
i cannot believe how amazing these Rogers sound!
now i would love to compare them to a Gretsch/Camco set.
for i have played Luds/Slingys.
Yes Sir
Also a yes! I tune the 12 inch a bit on the higher end, but find that it still mixes well with the tone of the 16. I agree with many of you - these sizes lend themselves to many different types of music, but I really love how they work for that classic rock sound :)
