Anyone Hand Hammered a snare?

Hey Guys,

I have somehow accumulated 3 Mapex 13" steel piccolo snares. I know not vintage but hopefully discussing here is OK as this is about the process and experiences instead of the actual snares themselves :)

Has anyone hand hammered a steel snare and have any suggestions or experiences you would like to share? Figuring since I have 3 of the same thing, and they are not expensive or vintage, I'm not really out much if it doesn't turn out well but "could" end up with something cool while spending quality time with my kids on this project.

No, but I filled one with water once to see what happened...

It doesn't work.

How do you propose to hammer it? You need some kind of anvil that reaches inside to back up the hammer, no?

I was surprised he didn't shy away from the holes for the hardware but I guess if you tried not to hit the holes you would have a heck of a time with the hammering. I wonder if hammering the holes could cause issues with random pieces of hardware not quite squaring up, or looking that way anyway, or having gaps between the hardware and the shell.

I also wondered if there is concern for the chrome potentially chipping or flaking off.

I do not mind trying something and having the sound not be what I'm looking for or not being too pretty, but I also do not want to have something that was perfectly fine to end up being unusable.

Yeah the water drum made no noise. Like hitting hard rubber block or something.

If you hit a mount hole, just hammer it back! If you have the shell and inclination, what the heck!
