Any ideas on year range of this Ludwig snare

Loading...

New to the forum and wondering if anyone would venture to guess the year of this lugwig snare drum. The body, hoops, and rods are original, but the snare strainer is not. No heads for this drum either. Any idea on the worth as well? I uploaded a few pictures and can take more if needed.

Thank you and I look forward to your replies.

Thank you,

Tim

Appears to be a 20's Ludwig snare.

Thank you for the reply! I had seen a similar one on eBay, and the owner called it a 1930’s .... asking $3200. Any ideas of value? Missing heads, original strainer, and lugs. Thanks again and appreciate the assistance!

The drum pictured is a hard to find size, but, condition is everything.

Your drum has dents and scratches and missing parts.

It's not worth thousands of dollars, possibly not worth hundreds. Sorry for the not great news.

More photos needed for a proper appraisal I think.

That throw-off looks to be a Ludwig P-80 piccolo throw-off. I had purchased one to replace the original throw on a vintage downbeat snare drum, that i since sold to fellow forum member CTV Michael. As BEC says, that snare has seen better days, and won't be worth what it would if it were in better condition. If you are willing to keep it, i'd have it professionally restored (re-chroming, finding original parts, etc.) Would cost hundreds to venture into a project like that, but i think it would definitely increase the value significantly. However, if you did go that way, you'd have to disclose that info to a serious buyer/collector.

Great job on the clean up so far. It's cleaning up nicely. I wouldn't even have it re-chromed and keep it original. Now all you've got to do is find original missing parts and bring that baby back to life. I'm sure it'll sound fantastic. The drummer for Stone Temple Pilots recorded one of their now famous albums (Tiny Music- Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop) with all vintage Ludwig drums, including a whole slew of snare drums from the 20's all the way through to the 70's. In of the album sleeve pics, he's clearly using a similar snare drum like yours. All i can tell you is that his drum sound on that album is superb, as it always is. So if you want to hear what 20's -50's Ludwig drums sound like in a modern hard rock context, that's the album to listen to.

cheers,

Rob
