here's a pic of an 8x12 late 60's Slingy shell that is part of a project I am working on. I am far out of my depth on this but am thinking about just clamping and glueing the best I can and then look to fill what is left.
Should I even bother?
Thats pretty much all you can do. If you take your time with the fill and get the edge smooth it should come out pretty good. I use 0000 steel wool on the edges and them some johnsons floor wax and polish to a smooth and shine with an old tshirt.
Remember to think really high on the sand paper like 800 and be gentle when you are removing the excess filler. It's really hard to put the wood back on the drum. :)
That would be a tough one, to put the wood back after sanding it away......:)
I plead guilty here !! ... That edge never was quite right after that....
You can get coloured wood putty to more closely match the bearing edges nowadays.
At least I learned that after my sanding fiasco !!
If there is separation of the rerings, you should get some glue in between them and then clamp off.
Do this before you fill in those bearing edge gaps.
VTM 2000 showed me how to get the glue in there.
I've got some small screwdrivers ground down very thin to slip in between the rering and the shell.
I get three of them in there about an inch apart and then carefully twist one on one end of the three a little to open up the separation a little.... lay down some glue, and work it in with a toothpick.
Remove that screwdriver, and put it at the other end of the row, and repeat the twist and glue step..... keep doing that till you are at the end of the separation, and clamp off the area.
Keep excess glue wiped off with a damp rag while you are gluing.
Use something to protect the shell and finish from the clamp feet.... they will damage your drum if you don't.
I keep my modified screwdrivers off by themselves. I don't want them clanking around into other tools and developing burrs.
Kevin there is an even better way...Go to The drug store and get a syringe, I think I use a 20 or 22 gauge. Just pour the glue in and get to work.

Cool Daddy-O !!
I'm learning all the time around here !
I wonder if they will sell me one... I look like a hippie, and this is North Carolina after all.........DOH
Only one way to find out....... I was going to do that drum in the pic tonight, but I'll take my hippie self up to CVS pharmacy tomorrow and see what happens.
Vintagemore2000, will you bail me out if this thing goes bad??.....

I use bamboo skewers, they are cheap and easy to find at Mal-AMrt, for about a buck. Follow the link in my signature and I have some how-to videos that show this exact fix.
Thanks for the tips guys, nice to know I am on the right track. I have never worked on compromised shells and I am not a natural wood worker.
I rescued this kit for cheap and am trying to get a players kit out of it. I am probably spending waaaaaay more than if I just bought a nice slingerland kit in good shape, but what fun would that be? Storm Trooper
jonnistix, your link takes me to "My" videos - I mean the vids I have uploaded on my personal youtube page - you are gonna have to update your link to your personal page url. I would like to check them out.
