Another project in the works

Well, here we go again. I obtained some 60's shells last summer and they have been sitting around a lot. So Its time to get off my rear and get these going.

The original plan was to remove the wraps, plug holes paint inside white and wrap with a veneer. The interior's of the drums are cleaning up nice so I might go with a clear lacquer or even a tinted lacquer for the interior's. Still going with veneer but have not decided which species to do it in yet. I will be making the bass drum virgin by plugging all necessary holes but instead of using the proper era spurs I want to use a newer fold up spurs that are more heavy duty as this kit will be my gigging kit. I have one keystone badge that came on the bass drum but will be looking for 3 others for the toms. The Snare drum shell I have is from the 70's, it is a marcher that will be cut down. So I think a b/o badge will be appropriate for that one.

I have also decided to make a go at re-working all of the edges. They are all the same, 45 degree inside with a 3/16" round over from the outside. Most of the edges are fine but Im going to do them all anyway.

This will be a fun project for me but its going to take a long time due to the amount of jobs I have going. I was not going to do this thread until someone (a good friend here on VDF) sort of requested that I do it.

So to start, here are some pics of the shells right out of the box.

Thank you!

Now the bass drum and the 18" floor tom.

Bass drum had a blue sparkle wrap that had been painted black.

The 18 had walnut cortex wrap, painted black inside and out.

The 18 had a nasty edge, this is what made me decide to do the deges!

Break a leg, Jeff! That looks like one great project! Edges too! This will be a good one to follow. Can't wait to see which veneer you settle on.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I'm sort of hesitant regarding interior lacquer-maybe just on this type of drum, with rerings. I'm more prone to consider either no finish, or something like beeswax or Tung Oil. I equate rering drums with a round-woody tone as opposed to a bright-attack type tone, which lacquer would enhance. But, this may only be an assumption, as I am not an acoustics expert. I vote mahogany exterior veneer with Caribbean Blue semi-opaque stain. Dark blue stain on naturally dark wood...

Nice project Jeff. Glad you have the time to start them!! Shell sizes? Is the bass a 20"? And 13"-16" toms -14"snare? That 18" FT will be killer!!!

Thanks John and Tom!

You know I never thought about how the sound could be affected by leaving the interiors raw, I will have to think about that. I di like mahogany, Johns cluddies sure looked good. I am thinking about Zebra wood for the veneer today anyway, my thoughts change from day to day.

Here is shot of the 13 before and after I ran it over the 45 degree bit to clean up that potion of the edge.

Also pictured is the plug in the bass drum.

Last pic is the bass drum after sanding away the black paint.

Thank you!

14x22 bass, 9x13, 16x16, 16x18. Its called my mini Bonham, like mini me but, ah , never mind.

Snare could be anything between 10 and 5" what should I do with it?

Nice sizes! I always liked the maple thermogloss finish but it's kind of boring compared to the exotic veneer side of things. But being Bonham inspired maybe? I'm sure whatever you pick will be killer!! Snare.... maybe something on the deep side? 6.5" to 7"?

As John mentioned in one of my threads, 7 x 14 with 16 mini-Classic lugs. There is something special that happens acoustically with this size.

I can't wait to see this transformation.

I already bought 8 regular snare lugs for this drum but thanks for the idea. I did consider the mini lugs on both ends at one time but I was able to get the lugs I have real cheep.
