Hey Gents.....I am planning to use my recently acquired 1978 Vistalite's for the first time at an upcoming show. They are monster sizes 26..20..15...anyhow, my question... How likely is it for a Vistalite bass drum to crack when you mount a tom directly on it? I don't feel comfortable YET, playing a rack tom that is separately mounted on it's own stand. I worry though, about using the mount on the kick drum for my tom as I don't want the bass drum to crack when played. Some opinions and input would be much appreciated...Help2crying2-07

Okay, I've never owned a Vistalite kit, but here's my take:

First, that kit is indeed larger sizes, which means more weight... and Vistalites don't really live up to the 'lite' part. Especially that 15" tom. That plastic, Lucite, whatever the heck they made those things out of is 35 years old, give or take. Plastic gets brittle with age, and I've seen lots of cracked and spidered Vistalite's.

If it were me, I think I would mount that rack tom on a snare stand. If that chokes it too much for your taste, get a heavy floor stand and ball / L mount and hang it off of it.

Also, toms that high, slung off larger bass drums... I like 'em lower.

+1 to what Blair said. I -never- mount toms on Vistalite bass drums of any size. Use a snare stand for the rack tom. You'll have greatly improved control over its positioning, and the bass drum is guaranteed to make it home in one piece.

And may I say; Damn, those are some BIG Vistalite tubs you have there! lol Must be a ton of fun to thunder around that set of drums. Thor's hammer!

My Vistas have the factory bass mounted tom holder with two toms: 12 and 13 inch. Not as heavy as yours, but I've never had a problem.

Remember the bass drums were designed to support that weight, and that it is spread over the tom holder mounting plate. To crack, the tom weight would need to deform the bass significantly out of round IMHO.

It is a good idea to keep both hoops on, as it keeps the bass in round shape and adds to the support of tom weight.

14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare

This is exactly why I sold my Acrylic Fibes kit, those mounts, I'm so glad I have pearl mounts on my Fibes COF kit, its a players kit that sounds amazing, good luck with that one.

get a old longer L arm ( longer than your short one on your tom centerpost) and put that on the center mount on the bass drum put a snare stand next to the bass drum mount the tom on the center post with the longer L arm then scoot the snare stand up under it for support it will be rock solid and you will have no issues with cracking....

P.S. the longer L arm would replace the short one on your tom holder i assume on the left side if you are a righty...
