Alright guys, Ludwig Eagle?

So I just unwrapped that trashed early 80's Ludwig kit I just bought, and under the floor tom wrap.....a freaking huge eagle in mahogany in the outer ply! What the heck is this? Was it supposed to be some civil war marching tom or something but then they just turned it into a floor and threw it with a kit? Anyone ever seen anything like this before?

I feel like Im Charlie in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory! I unwrapped a winner! Nice maple all around...but the floor is REALLY nice....plus it has this big freaking eagle on it!

I may be an inlay for the 75th Anniversary drum or an imitation of one???

Hi

Just took a look in the Rob Cook Ludwig Book. That eagle appears on Ludwig's "75th anniversary outfit" shown on pg. 163. It was made in 1984. Do any of your other drums have it too? The picture in Rob Cook's book shows the eagle on all of the toms. Sounds like you've got this anniversary kit - cool!

I just read up on that thread. Sounds like they didnt sell well and so Ludwig took back a bunch of them...and basically just wrapped over the remaining stock. My kit ONLY has it on the floor tom. Pretty cool though.

I was going to wrap this kit, now I am thinking natural maple. Hmm.

of course a good fine sanding and maybe just some natural butcher block satin paste wax it can be applied again and again, and it buffs to a real nice finish good luck nice kit, its like tong oil but without the damage and it does dry to a good protective finish

Yeah. The only problem is that this drum has the floor tom leg mount holes drilled into the bottom of the tail. Might look kind of ghetto.

Also this kit has the big ugly modular hardware, and part of my plan was to fill the holes and wrap over them so I could get rid of that (in my opinion) eye sore.

Then I was going to add a RIMS mount on the tom and end up with a little more "modern/classy" looking "vintage" kit....instead of a 80's rocker looking one.

Adam,Great score on the set.The floor tom is a 75th ann..drum and they a somewhat rare to fine.If i was you i would clean up the tom,re stain the clear coat on it, and if you sell on ebay list the drum it will bring good money...Ludwig did re-cover these drums they did not sell good at all,the only thing wrong with the floor tom is the placement of the floor tom leg mount...But will still bring good money...Mikey

Yeah- this was common practise amongst MANY musical instrument manufacturers.

I have a Les Paul Studio from '88 that removing the black finish revealed a maple neck. Gibson did maple necked Pauls in the late '70s. They were made in response to the natural Strats that were outselling Pauls two-to one.

It just comes to show that you never know what's underneath the finish.
