Ajax Nu Sound - disintegrated skin!

Loading...

Hi All!

Recently acquired a nice collection of 1960s Ajax Nu Sound drums, some are in good condition and some really aren't!

One of the 16 Floor Toms had an old reso skin (marked Cana Sonic Med Reg) which had for some reason deteriorated beyond repair, and once removed it has left a plasticky crust around the shell where it had become bonded to the wrap (I guess someone stored the drum in a petrol fume filled garage or something!)

Anyway - the question is = how to remove this hard plasticky crust.

So far I have tried the soft approach (furniture polish on a soft cloth) and the slightly harder approach - white spirit. Neither seem to make much difference.

Any clues VERY welcome!

THANKS!

Not sure if its relevant but on the page below some chap mentions the Cana Sonic's were woven fibreglass heads?

Maybe the clue is in there!

I'd maybe try carefully applying some acetone to the gunk only, and use a wooden scraper. Or goo-be-gone or other products like that, which all contain acetone. The acetone will melt certain older wraps hence being very careful.

Love your handle - get out of my way, Robstacle!
