I just removed the wrap from a '62 mahogany exterior bass drum and found a pretty nice finish underneath.
I need to remove the adhesive from the shell without causing too much damage.
I will sand and apply a couple coats of stain and clear lacquer later on, but I want to keep as much of the original finish as possible.
I've tried Goo Gone, Goof Off, another citrus based product, alcohol and acetone on small areas with no results.
The acetone actually reactivated the adhesive, and made it even stickier.
The alcohol worked somewhat, but only with a large amount of it and an even larger amount of labor..... about 15 minutes for a 3x3 patch, so you can imagine how long that will take for an entire bass drum.... damn.
Xylene and Toulene were mentioned by another forum member, but I can only find those in gallon containers for $19 each..... so I haven't gone there yet.
Has anyone gone through this with success, and how did you do it, please?
Much thanks, my friends !!
