I have been restoring my father's old 5-Piece Slingerland kit for a couple of years. I learned to play on these things and they are in near perfect condition. The drum kit looks excellent on the exterior. Lately I've noticed that the floor tom has absolutely no resonance. I have been using Remo Pinstripes but it sounded as though I was banging on a trash can. I took the heads off to inspect the inside and found quite a few cracks. The bottom of the top rim looks terrible.
I was wondering if you think that I should fill in the cracks with a maple color wood putty, which would probably be obvious but I would like to get the sound back without hurting the value of these drums. Advice please
