A HOT lead....and a scale question

Loading...

So I am at a new barber shop this morning. Well, it's an old barber shop, and I needed a haircut. So I sit down in the chair and we start talking. He has a few old radio's on a shelf in front of me, and one thing leads to another; "I have a big, old cymbal you might be interested in." Well, that's enough for me to want to at least check it out.

So, I am going to stop by later this week and he is going to dig it out.

My question is, what do you cymbal guys use to weigh you cymbals?

I call tell you everything you need to know about drums, but am weak on the cymbals, help me out here. I know a bit about the Zildjian logo's, but give me some schooling on weights.Help2

Weights can vary significantly depending on the size of the cymbal and even between cymbals of the same diameter. The weight measurements are generally in grams. As an example, a 20" ride cymbal can range from around 1700g for a very thin model to 2500 grams of more for a heavy model. The medium thin and medium models in that size, which are often favored by cymbal aficionados, range from approximately 1800-2250g. For 22" rides that number would generally be arround 2000 to 2700 grams. Of course these these are approximations. Some people, for example, have 22" cymbals verging on 3000g. If you get get a good picture of the stamp and give us the diameter and weight we can give you an idea of where it stands, weight wise, and it's approximate value.

Well, all hopes were dashed! Turned out to be a cheap Pearl cymbal from the 60's. 20", very light and cheap. I passed on it.

I have had no problem with just wandering into the local PO... They don't seem to mind use of their scales...

Cheers

Sorry to hear that. Did you play it at all? It might be one of the old Js, or something from Italy which would be nice enough sounding.
