Hi All,
I've got a 5 piece silver sparkle 1971 Ludwig kit that I acquired used (and cheaply) about 25 years ago. It was pretty raggedy already then, and I'm not a drummer by trade, so I set it up in my basement but never did much with it. Lately I've had an opportunity to play a little more, and have decided to fix them up. I don't think they're worth restoring to mint condition, but I would like to make the set complete and whole again. And I have enough appreciation for vintage things in general that I'd like to get them as close to original as possible, even if that's just in "good" rather than "flawless" condition. I've been lurking on this forum a bit and have found lots of useful info on cleaning up and basic restoration already, and for that I thank everyone.
I've been scouring eBay and Craigslist for the parts I need (and think I need), and have picked up a few useful hardware and parts items. But there are a few things that seem to be a little harder to find, and I'm wondering if there might be reasonable replacements I could use that wouldn't make any noticeable difference in the look or sound of the drums.
So, my questions:
The front hoop on the 22" BD is missing. Finding a Ludwig hoop in silver sparkle has been a challenge so far. Is there any other make s.s. hoop that might be easier to find that would make a suitable replacement? Alternately, if I were to get a 22" hoop with a different inlay, how much trouble and/or expense am I looking at to replace the inlay with silver sparkle? I see that Precision Drum sells s.s. wrap, but obviously I don't need a whole sheet, and I haven't come across anyone who sells it in strips for inlays. Also, I don't have a workshop or any specialized tools, so is it even practical to consider replacing the inlay myself?
Also on the BD, the t rods and claws for the front hoop are MIA. Does anyone make Ludwig style replacements? Or is my best bet to wait for a set of used ones to come up on eBay? If so, is there anything I need to be aware of as far as size, length, threads, etc.? (I've learned the hard way that just because something looks right, that doesn't always mean it is right.)
The bottom hoop on the 16" floor tom is missing. Since it's not a cast piece, is there any difference between an original Ludwig hoop and your standard stamped metal off-the-shelf replacement hoop?
Is there a Ludwig certain snare would have been standard with this set? I got it with a chrome Pearl snare, and even I know that's not right :)
I do have a few more questions, but I'll save them for another post. Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can offer.
Scott
