Will definitely pick up an equalizer. I don’t mind a square of gel, but as I mentioned, it’s good to go with the Emperor head on it. I’m honestly afraid to go out and buy a new emperor head. I think this one has some sort of magical power.

D-Rum!

You may be right about your Emperor head being invested with magical powers! After all, it is 2020!

Haha. It very well could be. No surprises anymore. It’s really crazy. Overtones AND the weird snare buzz gone. Sounds incredible. I’m picking another one today. We’ll see what goes on.

Also-I’d love to post some very short videos. Anyone have some tips on doing that?

So I’m still grappling with some funky overtones and snare buzz. I have yet to pick up a brand new emperor head, but the old one still sounds great. Right now I have the new Vintage emperor on and with some gel and/or utilizing the internal muffler, I can get a decent sound and what I’m looking for. However, I’ve started cleaning all of my hardware on the old Luddy kit I’m refinishing as well as this snare. I started with the snare and soaked all the lugs and tension rods in blue dawn dish soap and water for 24 hours, cleaned the lug inserts with a pipe cleaner and sparingly used some WD-40 on the rods. I did this mainly because a couple of the rods on the batter side seems tighter than the rest when tuning even though I was getting an even pitch all around.

Anyway, I haven’t put the hardware back on yet because I noticed some very slight ply separation in two areas on the resonant side. I have no doubt I can fix this fairly easily, but could this be a culprit? My plan is to fix the separation, buy a butt plate that fits the original holes (the one on it now is drilled and installed slightly below where the original one was, but I don’t feel like this is a factor. But, better safe than sorry), and also put on some equalizer snare strands and a new standard emperor batter. The bearing edges and snare beds seem totally fine to me. I know this is a lot of info! Just trying to figure this out as I think this can be a really great snare. So! Just to reiterate, could the ply separation be causing some of the wonky overtones? See pics. End rant.

I your drum a floating head design ? Is there a lot of splay in the tension rods?

Looking at the pics,I see the original throw has been swapped out with a Dunnet swivel.

They are tweaky in that the snares can be askew and not parallel to the bearing edges.

The hole mounting on the Dunnet is universal and may have some play in it causing irregular tension on one side or another.

It is not. Little to no splay I don’t believe. Will take another look when I put it back together.

It is a Dunnett swivel, which I don’t care for at all. Good looking throw, but it’s so awkward. This may have a play in my troubles. You say the drilling spaces are universal? I’m hoping so. I’d love to replace it.

Jeeez! I remember the "Throwoff Wars" of the early 2000's -when everyone was focusing a lot of energy on designing a "better" throw off. It was the Nickel Drumworks one that started it....and then, from there, it just got ridonkulous with these super gigantic boat-anchor-like throw offs that did things that you didn't know you needed a throw off to do! It makes me chuckle whenever I see those types of throw offs next to a P-83.

Yeah I’m really not picky about throw offs. I like one that is at least aesthetically pleasing, but I just want it to do one thing well....throw my snares on and off haha. No need to swivel out of the way and make it hard as hell to install snare wires.
