72 Rogers set

Hello everyone...First of all, I just wanted you all to know, you guys are the bomb, this site is awsome. I have learned so much just reading. Don't talk alot, but listen or read in this case. I'm an old Ludwig guy and thought I knew quite a bit about them, but I was humbled. I for one THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge the way you do daily. I'm not a suck up, just a simple truth. O.K....on with it,I don't have a camera right now, which would save alot of writting. I picked an old Rogers set yesterday at the local music store for little bit of nothing. From my research I believe it's a studio X. My question is about the paper tags on the inside. They don't say holiday or power tone, none of that, just Rogers Drums USA. Serial # B19141 then at the bottom of tag the #'s 60-5322 then 9/72 which I'm assuming is mgf. date. If anyone could tell me alittle about these I would be grateful. Really a cool set. All hardware seems to be there, as far as I can tell. Missing a couple of set screws for 16 and 18 F.T.'s no big deal. Mounted toms are concert. Just wanted to give this thing some TLC, get it right and shined up and may sit on it for awhile. Thank you...Joe

This is what is known as a 9-72 kit. They were made in Fullerton, CA around 72, 73 ... around that timeframe. They might be 3 ply, as this was about the time when CBS went to that build. Rest easy in the knowledge that those are very nice drums. There are the purists who appreciate the Cleveland or Dayton era drums more. But, those 9-72 builds are really sweet in their own right. enjoy them.

Bowing Thank you RogerSling...All the drums do have re-rings, so I thought they may be 3 ply. It'll be fun and a pleasure to get these drums all fixed up. Thanks again...Joe

Just to be clear, It wasn't only the 3 ply shells that had rerings. So did the others. You would need to count 'em to be positive.

Honestly, it really doesn't matter. They all sounded very sweet and open. It's not like the differences between the 3 and 5 of Slingerland or the 3 and 6 of Ludwig. Rogers shells during the 60s and 70s sounded great, regardless of the plies.

According to

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/rogers_drumsets.html

looks like Studio X showed up in 73-74 Catalog with swivomatic

76-77 showed up as Studio TEN with memriloc hardware

I think they were dropped after 77

Thank you for the info. I really appreciate it. This set has the swivomatic hardware and I guess die cast stuff. All the collet noses are split at the ends. Won't tighten up to well. I heard the machined were much better. Maybe I can pick up some reproduction or something for it. It'll be alright. The set will be incredable when I'm through with it. Thanks again...Joe
