72' Ludwig 'Rock Kit' Sizes Last viewed: 13 hours ago

Hi All,

The guys here that know me, know that whenever I sell one, I buy one. I am semi-retired and I earn a supplemental income from my drum sales throughout the year. I recently sold a cherry condition 70's Ludwig stainless steel kit (to a forum member and friend of mine,) so I grabbed this little beauty to replace it in the roster. It'll be going up for sale as soon as I do my usual detailing. The drums are in great physical shape and they sound killer. Tell me what you think.

8"x12", 10"x14", 16"x16", 14"x24" Granitone interiors! That's great 3-ply lumber under there...

Wow, John. Blue sparkle almost never makes me drool, but that is a great kit.

It's kind of odd to have a 12 and a 14... Makes me wonder if there wasn't a 13 to get them at one point.

Buzz- I was thinking the same thing when I bought them. I even asked the guy if he had gotten a dual tom holder stand with the kit to hold the 12 and missing 13 with the 14 mounted to the right on the bass drum.

12" and 14" actually makes a lot of sense, moreso that 12" and 13", which can sometimes be a pain to achieve proper proper tonal spread without compromising the tuning of both.

Nice kit there John! Around '73 it looks to be, right?

There's a silver sparkle Rogers kit local that someone is looking to get rid of cheap with 12" and 14", and I just might do it. :D

John, If you're talking about that little Rogers kit out on Long Island (photographed outdoors in front of what looks to be a really nice house/property) I almost called the guy and hopped in the car to get it myself. It's a beautiful kit, John and the price is better than right. Go for it amigo. Can't go far wrong investing a few dollars in a quality kit in such great condition. At the asking price, you already have built-in equity should you change your mind later and sell it. Let me know if you buy that one. I was lusting after that little gem myself!

I just got a really great surprise! I've been cleaning up the drums and when I had the heads off of the toms I noticed that the wood showing at the bearing edges was dark red!!!!

[COLOR="DarkRed"]MAHOGANY SHELLS![/COLOR] Cool1

Mahogany/Poplar/Mahogany. Man, it just doesn't get much better than that. Why on earth Ludwig would cover 3-ply mahogany shells with Granitone paint is beyond me. But it explains why these drums sound so good!

It's not luck. I spend several hours a day scanning every place I can find where vintage drums are advertised for sale. Every once in awhile the right kits at the right price come up and I'm there. Due diligence, plain vanilla, old-fashioned hard work is what turns them up. You gotta wanna... D' Drummer
