60's Japanese grommets - Where can you find 'em?

Loading...

I am recovering a late 60's Pearl set of drums and need a few more of these very simple grommets that have bendable tines on one side. Does anyone know the official name for this type of fastener? I can't find them anywhere. They are like a paper brads but with an eyelet.

These little gems are pretty useless as a true fastener for a badge, but pretty awesome as a simple finishing touch on a cheapo kit. I usually affix the badges with a little trimmed hi bond tape with these fasteners anyway. Thanks!

Maybe specialty clothing or sewing shops?

I'd just buy whatever works from some hardware store. I wouldn't be too fussy if it's just MIJ. A lot of the metal used in those drums were of poor quality anyway. Perhaps a gromet from your hardware store would even be a better replacement. I restored a MIJ set before and replaced the metric-sized lug inserts with with standard modern inserts. I think it was an improvement. Some of the MIJ shells sound nice in my own opinion. Best of luck.

Glad you are working to get it correct the the last detail. Searched but could not find anyone making replacements. Agree, not much good at their job. Afraid to take mine off per breakage.

This part may need to be sourced from donors.

Nothing special here but I like them.

I, like Creighton, give you a lot of credit for trying to get all of the details right! Sometimes, it's an impossible task but, when it works, it's well worth the effort. I was lucky enough, to recently attain some vintage Tama wing bolts suitable for an old Star cocktail drum a few days ago from a fellow member. I'll soon mention him in Seller Feedback. Gibraltars fit but, they weren't correct. Best of luck, sir!

Hey, thanks for the support and kind words. I too think these "winged" grommets are pathetic, but like the old camping and hiking adage says: "leave it like you were never there". If I can keep it all original, I will. The biggest compliment to me is if someone says my drum restoration looks totally stock.

Sooooo, If anyone has a tray full of these winged grommets, I can give them a good new home!!
