60's /early 70s Ludwig Orphan Rescue Kit.

Loading...

Ok, ream me out ! Eak, for the purists !!

These where an assortment of late 60's /early 70s Ludwig tenor / marching drums with an assortment of hand painted ugly past owner brush jobs. {Over a decade until I found all the correct sizes I wanted...patience !! }

I sanded them down cleaned the interiors, plugged holes on the 10 x 6 1/2 and added small classics on the reso sides and respaced the bearing edge side lugs. Original factory edges where respected, and sanded and cleaned up. I have a newish Ludwig tom holder coming in the mail as I type !! {Contemplating putting E-bayer "My Old Kentucky Drums" resto badges on these}

Rewrapped them with a non-catalogue Rolex turquoise satin flame from NYC's Canal Plastic's clearance section.

Sizes: 20 x 14" bs, 15 x 12" flr, 12 x 8", 10 x 6 1/2". Working on a period correct 14 x 5 1/2 8 lugger also.

I have a total investment of $110 into these, yet they sound "like a million bucks" !! Got the new Atlas Tom mounts from GC clearance for $5 each !! Waiting for a set of butterfly bass drum hoop claws to arrive. Kiss

I gigged twice with them since the completion last week, very happy with the classic tone and rat-rod asthetics !

I love stories like this. Awesome nice work. Probably sounds 10x better than any $500 new kit on the market today.

Thanks guys !!

I really wish more young drummers would try doing "rescue project"s on classic drums with old growth wood and mojo for miles then spending big $$'s on MIJ asmby line new stuff !! I guess this is my age speaking !! 56 young years in my drumming heart and body ! Keep on Pl

I agree.

And I think you meant MIC not MIJ. Actually, a new MIJ kit would be worth some big bucks today. Think Sakae! :)

Good job, man! I'm in the process of piecing together a WFL orphan kit...although I don't think I will be wrapping mine. I have 13x9 & 14x12 toms, 16x16 floor tom and 26x14 bass drum. I use the 14x12 tom on a cut-down snare stand for a 1 up, 2 down config. It's been fun putting it together.
