I just bought this kit. The seller said it was an old Star (Tama) kit but I'm not sure. Does anyone know something about this kit? The sizes are 20x14 12x8 14x14.
60ies Star Drums
First off, nice looking kit!!
I think the seller is right on the money. Star were supposedly made by Tama
before they started using the Tama name. Much like Pearl and their gazillion
names. I'm guessing the grain (inside of shell) runs up and down as opposed
to around the shell.
Not much else to say really - Nice import set from the 60's
Hi,
I can't see whether the wrap is still original or whether it is rebuild - meaning: with a new finish. So the finish maybe original or renewed.
The STAR drums with this badge are definitely coming from the 60s. The later STAR badges look different. Indeed, STAR belonged to Hoshino Company, which still exists and distributes their drums under the brand TAMA now ...
STAR is still not very much required (for vintage freaks) today like the big names Ludwig, Slingerland etc.
But their making (chrome and wood) was excellent, as they wanted to enter the market with best quality: and that's it! I possess a 'younger' STAR with still outstanding chrome condition - still after nearly 40 years!

Ralf
Thanks for the answers. The coating appears to be original and the grain is running up and down.
I can't wait to get new heads on it.
I just love those old kits. The snare drum will be weak by todays standards, but the toms and kick are really nice!
Hi once again,
I just looked of your set one more time. The BD shows no holes for a bracket / railway consolette (might be visible if you look inside the shell upwards) ...?
The small tom as well: no holes indicating that there was installed a tom mount ever? mmmmh ...
That, to my opinion would be rather strange for typical STAR drums of that time.
But if there are - even filled/ closed - holes inside and there's nothing to be seen from outside: the wrap is new and not original.
Greetings,
Ralf
There are holes on the bassdrum for a railconsolette and the tom has a mountingplate (look at the pic)

Hi, that kit you have is an early Star that badge is the first one they used from 1965.
Well done!
