50's gretsch WMP for rewrap. Weirdness

Loading...

Hey Everyone! I was just given a 10x14 Gretsch WMP marching snare from the 50's. It's a three ply with a skinny stick badge. The wrap is extremely yellowed and cracked. I would have left it, but the cracking and white under where the lugs were was just a little much. I'm going to use tube lugs and single flange hoops on it.

The interior is silver, but looks sloppy. It looks brushed on. The wrap has a gauze like texture to it. I started pulling up the wrap and realized why. There is a gauze layer underneath! Has anyone seen this before?? The wrap came off easily, but it left behind the gauze. The glue has hardened. Does anyone know of a way to easily remove the glue and gauze? I started sanding it, but I would like to keep the mahogany in good shape.

A lot of times when you wrap over wood, it`s best to not final sand the shell. Now when you strip the glue off, and want a nice finish, you will end up final sanding the drum.

Mahogany shows scorning very well, like if I took a drumstick and ran it across the drum shell before final finish,...It`s a good idea to break in all new sandpaper on a scrap piece of wood first. Nothing less than 250 grit at all times.

I don`t suggest anything else with Mahogany.

Oh, maybe a pic. would help.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
