I agree wholeheartedly that it's crap to limit a cymbal to "crash" or "ride" based on how the manufacturer labels it - I'm an admitted novice, but the 19" Zildjian K Dark med-thin crash I recently acquired crashes gorgeously, but sounds great for riding, too.

Doesn't Steve Jordan use, like, 22" and 24" Paiste "rides" for pretty much everything? I remember seeing a DVD of his work w/ the John Mayer trio, and thinking, "holy cow, he's playing some huge cymbals!" then looking up online to see his set-up, and it's like: 17" crashes (x2) as hats, and all these giant rides - and no "crashes" per se. But of course he crashes the mess out of 'em. Very cool.

Maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough - couldn't tell you a thing about cymbal weight measurements - but I'd go with my ear every time.
