28" drum head on 27.5" bass drum?

Loading...

Hi,

I am looking to buy an older bass drum of the Swedish equivalent of Ebay. The seller claims that it is a 27.5" 1930s Gretsch. I understand odd sizes like this was quite common. Now, is it possible to use a 28 drum head with a 27.5 drum? With minor modifications? Or would I be destined to buy expansive custom made drum heads?

Much appreciated

It depends. With regards to the shell, an oversized head isn't the biggest problem. But The hoops will probably be too small, which is a problem. If you're very skilled you might adjust the hoops by inserting a piece of wood, but then there's the problem of "splay" because the hoop became bigger and the lugs are still on the same place..

Thanks a lot for the reply. Sounds like quite a project. If I buy the drum I might have to use 27.5 calfskin heads or custom order from remo instead.

I once asked what a custom remo head would cost...... I remember it was around 300 E for one simple ambassador weight coated head!!!

Try STdrum germany. The have odd sized heads (but then again: they only have smooth whites).

Are you stuck to the idea of buying a 30's Gretch in particular, or do you have a wish to experiment with a big 28 inch bass drum and stumbled upon the drum your talking about?

In the latter case: I'd let it go. And wait awhile. On european markets 28 inch bass drum are not so rare. I see big vintage Premiers now and then on the Dutch internet market. For about 100 E you could have one.

But maybe in Sweden it's more difficult.

You could also ask the seller for precise measurements of shell and hoops. Who knows the hoops are fitting for modern heads and the shell is just undersized.

Good luck anyway.
