20 Years Since Billy Cobham Last viewed: 5 hours ago

From FFR428

Billy Cobham was the first drummer that made me go "WTF is that he's playing!" and want to break and burn my drumsticks!!

Ditto. My first exposure to his playing and style was listening to the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I was playing in a horn band covering Tower of Power and Chicago at the time, and felt the same "Holy $#!t, WTF" revelation when I heard him deliver what we now call "fusion". I knew at that moment that there was a level of drumming I would never be able to replicate, and that even if I was able to come close to copying some of his moves, I would never possess the genius to originate such stuff.

When MO's "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" came out, I was dismayed that Cobham had been replaced with Michael Walden, but Walden certainly filled Cobham's shoes very well with his own "WTF" moments. Cobham was a true pioneer who blazed a trail that others simply followed.

Simply put-he was the "Father of Fusion Drumming" and left his footprints that we`re still tying to follow to this day.His body and mind are as strong as they were 20 yrs. ago and i`m sure he`ll blow ya` away 10 yrs from now! Very fortunate for you to have seen him and even more fortunate to be in a pic with him. This legend is one of playing power and prowess only reserved for the very elite.

I know Billy played a clear Fibes set back then. No idea on heads. This was his A Zildjian setup from then. From the old cymbal setup catalog in the 70's. Jeff Ocheltree worked (and still does) with Billy. Not sure if he was with him during Spectrum. I think that was 73 when it came out? But Jeff's on FB and might answer some things for you. Good luck!

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

I saw Billy with Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1973 when i was playing in Boston. They were the opening act for The J. Geils band and fresh out of the gate-marvellous musicianship and great pic of you both.Frame that one!Wayne

Opening for J.Giles?

That's as bad as me seeing Gentle Giant OPEN for Foghat..early-mid 70's....Flint,Michigan...

BTW..got to meet Bill after a clinic here quite a few years back..

I told him I had quite a few vintage drums FS..and I recall him being interested in seeing some Radio King and Leedy snares at his hotel.......

He asked his minder where they had to be the next day..and it was quite a ways away..so Bill(y) said he didn't have the time...too bad..that would have been fun to hear him blast away on some snares....

I saw Mahavisnu headline here in 1972....

The Section opened for them.....with Russ Kunkel on drums/Lee Sklar bass/Danny Kotchmar guitar...and a couple others I can't recall!

Billy Cobham might be regarded as "The Father of Fusion Drumming" - and rightly so - but when I listen to the many drummers who appear with the Buddy Rich ghost band (some I can't even bear to listen to, they are so far out of their element), he stands out as one of the few that even comes close to driving the band the way Buddy did.

He has it all: chops, power, sensitivity and, he can swing!

How can he be your drummer hero? He doesn't play Camco or George Way!

DOH

Never play it the same way once.
