I just bought a 66 acro shell off of ebay. I was amazed at the tonal difference between this shell alongside my 80s acro! I tapped both bare shells and the 66 has much more of a resonance and tone to it! Can't wait to get all the parts together and finish it. Should be this week!

Congrats, buddy, that's a nice one. Those keystone acro's are real workhorse snares. Pix when she's all done.

Yessir! The shell is in decent shape, definetely not museum quality. The lugs I'm transferring from the 80s acro for now are a bit unsightly. They did shine up, but are pretty pitted up. It's going to be a player for sure!

I've been trying to find out what makes 404 aluminum... 404 aluminum?? ... and if 60's acros and 80's acros where all made from matching 404 alloys.
Can't find much reading on that... but you got me curious. Mind Blowi

Jim, I'm wondering the same thing. With both shells clean of any hardware, the 66 acro had a long ring to it, when the late 70s/early80s acro was more of a thud....it had a little ring to it but nothing even close! But the newer acro does have the gray coating on the shell so I wonder if that would cut some of the resonance out.

congrats on the new to you snare. ive got a couple of those. they sound amazing. the early b/o badge models sound much the same. as they started painting them and powdercoating them, i guess the outer finish on the shell got thicker and muffled the sound some. thats my thoughts anyway. ive got 6 acros i think. all from different eras. the earlier the better for me. enjoy it!

I grabbed a 1968 one Saturday....first 60's one in a long time!
There are many 70's ones out there......
Yea, Ive had the early 80s one (I say early 80s.. has blue/olive but with rounded edges) since I was about 11 years old (30 now). It was my school band snare and somehow through the years it was used as parts for other snare drums. It's been a shell with lugs for 15 years at least. Ive always wanted a 60s acrolite and saw the shell on ebay. paid 50 bucks for the shell (probably not the best deal). I now need a throw off and butt plate, snares and heads and I should be ready to rock, or swing, or shuffle! The Band
