1965/66 Slingerland Shelbyville Stagebands

Loading...

Hi all

So I stumbled upon this kit on Reverb during my usual rounds & made an offer and here we are. I thought it was too good of a deal. Something HAD to be wrong with this kit but it was cheap & all the extra goodies made this a no brainer.

20/13/14/14 Stage Band with Shelbyville badges on snare & bass drum.

Once the kit arrived, I saw my issue but after setting the kit up, I just was like wow. The wrap has faded & blotched to a blood red color with weird orange peel like effects. The dark spots give it a almost hot lava effect. So I now call this the Hot Lava Sparkle kit. I also restored my fathers original Slingerland head from his 20" kick from many many years ago and it's a perfect fit. The oak rings look killer and all the shells are date stamped Dec 16 1965 (tom) Dec 17 1965 (snare) & Jan 12 1966 BD/FT). All the chrome is super nice & no other wrap issues.

The kit also came with a really closed matching Niles badge 8x12 tom & 8 lug (Pearl?) very close matching extra snare. All brand new Remo Coated Ambassador heads on all the drums & new Gator bags for all drums except the import snare.

This is the first Slingerland kit in my collection now. I'm glad I took the chance on this. First gig coming up.

I’m not that familiar with Slingys. Is that the normal placement of the rail mount? It’s seems waaayyy to one side to me.

That red color though - very nice!!

Looks like the standard location to me, offset from the center by one lug location.

Thanks!

It's the way they made them there in Shelbyville TN for the little bit of time they were made there.

So I've been reading in various online locations that Slingerland put BLUE sparkle wrap under the red which over time has this effect on the drums. Anyone else hear or read of this?

Hi Mark!

Here's the page from the Dr. CJ Wenk article about Sparkling Red Pearl. Note the information for the 1959 version... http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_4_finishes13.htm#

Also, keep in mind that this color was very popular, so Slingerland most likely had quite a bit of it in stock for many years.

Finally, here is a picture of my 60's "Saleman's Sample" color swatches. The sales people would carry these with them to show music stores the available finishes. Look closely at the Red Sparkle and you'll see those same dark spots. The back is Sparkling Blue Pearl! All the swatches are now in a frame in my drum room, so I can't get to them for a picture.

-Mark
