1964 Ludwig Gold Sparkle Classics

Loading...

I have a '64 Ludwig Classic kit in gold sparkle, that I am looking to sell in order to buy a used Mlasko kit. There are in very good shape except for two things: the single tom mount was replaced with a Ludwig double tom mount by the previous owner (I am the second owner.) Second, the white interiors of the shells were brushed with matte black paint to make them dark. I cannot fathom what would possess someone to do that, but the paint was done conservatively and doesn't appear to be gooped up on the edges at all. It seems to me that it would be easy to remove while preserving the original white, but I haven't touched it.

The chrome hardware is in great shape with no pitting and the shells are very solid. The serial number is 85XXX and the kit is a 22" bass, 16" floor, 13" mounted tom, and 1964 85XXX acrolite snare (14x5). I'm having difficulty getting pics up because the upload limit per picture is so small, but I'm working on it. The wrap also looks amazing, with no lifting that i can see.

Does anyone have an idea what these might be worth? Thanks a lot everyone.

If you are buying Mlaskos, I assume you are in or near the Emerald city. When you get ready to throw them out, PM me your address so I can prowl your trash can.Clapping Happy2

Do you have an idea of what you want for them? Or tell me when you are putting them out for trash pickup:o

Well, i am not looking to make money off these drums--i just want to finance the Mlaskos. The used kit I want is 1300. The last really nice 60s Classic kit I saw on ebay went for 1500 and didn't have a snare (3 pc) much less a '64 Acrolite purchased with the original kit, which is what I have. That kit was marine pearl or something--not Gold Sparkle which is rarer and seems to be more highly prized (for obvious reasons.) Of course, it didn't have the dumb paint on the shell interiors either. So 1300 sounds like a legit price to me.

I saw a set just like this sell in my neck of the woods for $900 last month, if that helps...

That's interesting. For reference, a champagne sparkle Club Date (entry level kit in the 60s with bottom of the line hardware) from '65 just sold on ebay for 910, plus shipping. The tom wasn't even original and wasn't a club date.

I'd say 1300 for a Classic with all the original shells plus a matching acrolite seems pretty sane. I resist ebay because of the rather exorbitant seller fees, but I suppose I could put them up.

Ebay is funny sometimes....

Another set like yours from '67 in nicely mellowed WMP with 2 flat base cymbal stands, hi-hat stand, shell-mounted cymbal arm, and bass pedal went for $860 on Feb. 10th. No snare, but a hecku lot of hardware.

And no black painted interiors.

If your Acro is in great shape, it might fetch $150 to $250 on its own.... there has been a big interest in Keystone Acros here of late, but with the set, it doesn't bump up the value near as much as that.

I hope you get your $1300, but I'm afraid the black interiors and non-original double tom mount are hurting you quite a bit. Acro or not.

Peace, and good luck !!

Hey thanks a lot. Sounds like ebay is probably the best option then. I know people have discussed the issue of restoring the painted interiors before in this forum, but it seems to usually be targeted at kits that don't have original white paint underneat. Can someone recommend the best way of going about removing the brushed-on black (looks to be acrylic to me) while preserving the white underneath? Is sanding the best idea? Or a chemical remover?
