1964 Ludwig Clubdate -Newbie- In way over his head!

Well, as the title said, I'm probably in way over my head. Life long musician/recording engineer, who never owned a kit before, was bit by the drum bug. Recently bought my youngest son a kit for Christmas, and it has been so much fun breaking out all of my instruments, and playing. I normally record on my protools rig solo, and cheat all the time (using drum programs). I've always been into vintage gear, guitars, basses, keyboards, etc.

We'll, when I saw a vintage ludwig standard kit on Craig's list for $100.00, and it looked to be in pretty good shape - I went to pick it up for myself (thinking I'd clean it up nice - cool blue strata). When I got there, to find it was sold, I started checking out the other stuff this guy had. The only thing really in my price range turned out to be a 20", 14", 12" Ludwig Clubdate kit, in shambles.

We're talking, cheap blue paint, no bottom rims, some kind of Kevlar wrap in and on the bass drum - you get the picture. Not a pleasant one. But, me being the guy I am, saw something. Not sure what it was just yet - but we drove home together ( a 45 minute ride), and so the journey begins....

Now, I'm a 41 year old guy, no carpenter - but, I fancy I can do a "few things" - but believe me, any one want to chime in with some Bright ideas? Be my guest (I'm sure I could use all the help and advice your willing to give).

I have been reading the forums, and recently joined - so now I'll start to share my journey with you....

Pretty worked, someone removed the original floor tom legs, and mounted these beautiful MAPEX ones! Nothing against Mapex, but they just don't belong on a vintage ludwig.

Needless to say, anyone looking to sell their floor tom legs?

I just finished my Club Date restoration so if you need any help let me know. Overall they look to be good shape structurally. Those floor tom legs and mounts are not original. Other than that it does not look like there are any extra holes anywhere.

Please repaint those insides white!! If you have any questions a lot of us have been through restoring Club Dates. The nice thing is these drums sound amazing when you are done. I think you will enjoy them.

Just so my my plans are clear, I am looking to strip these down, clean the up, and re-wrap them. I'm having my doubts - but I'm gonna give it a whirl.

Peeled off some of that Kevlar wrap from inside the bass drum. Hopefully that's the worst sound that will ever come from this thing again. Made my heart skip a beat doing it.

It's like the fibre weave you'd find on a good street hockey stick.

A heat gun might help get some of that stuff off. Looks like I see some of the factory white paint peaking out from under there. Re wrap sounds like a good option in this case. Just make sure to trim back a bit around the bearing edges so heads fit ok. Factory wrap jobs had the wrap as the outermost ply so it actually became part of the shells and you can see this at the scarf joint.

Thanks Airborne. 333 white is the plan. Structurally, I think I have some problems. The bottom heads were left off the toms, and I'm noticing a bit more than a snug fit on the reso heads.

By the way - also need reso hoops, 12" and 14"!

Also, the bass drum did have the original spur leg holes filled, and new ones drilled. Seems to be some damage on the bottom of the shell.

The 12" tom has a bit of warping where the lugs were mounted - almost indented. May be a major issue.
