1960s Zildjians or later?

Loading...

Hi,

I've been purchasing a number of Zildjian cymbals off eBay recently to go with the Vistalite set that I'm fixing up for my son. Goal was to get him some decent cymbals without spending a fortune so I was looking for 70s or early 80s Zildjians (14" hi hats, 16" crash, 18" crash/ride and 20" ride) and my target was to spend no more than $75 each. I finally managed to get everything and he's happy with them so I'm happy!

I did end up with a couple that I think are 60s Zildjians and I was hoping someone could confirm if that's correct or, if not, roughly when they were made? Note that the 20" ride has a very tall stamp (1 1/2") compared to my other ones.

Thanks for your help!

Scott

Both around mid 1960's or a little later in the 1960's.

Drumaholic,

Thank you very much for confirming what I thought (based pretty much on your stamp timeline information).

Could you take a look at the stamp in this eBay auction? The hollow logo would date this to mid to late 1970s but all the later 1970's/1980's stamps I had seen with 3 dots have had a large CO (versus Co).

The Hollow Logo was 1978-1981.

Hey,

I've seen the following ranges given in various timelines and discussions on hollow ink logo Zildjians.

1976-1981

1975-1983

1978-1981

So widest range taking all 3 ranges into accounts would be 1975-1983. I have a couple hollow logo cymbals with 2 stamps. An early to mid 70's style stamp (no 3 dots and small o in Co) and a late 70's to early 80's style stamp (3 dots and large O in CO).

I have pictures of a number of pictures of the stamps associated with my 70s and 80s Zildjians here - http://www.drumforum.org/index.php?/topic/38161-hollow-logo-zildjians-with-co-and-3-dots-stamp/

Zildjian gives many responses to the same question on their site within the ranges you stated. Zildjian switched to the solid Zildjian logo top and bottom in 1982. As far as the start dates, the 1977 catalog does not have any logos on the bottom.

The arguments can be made as to when exactly Zildjain started (mid 77? late 77? early 78?) or exactly when they stopped (late 1981? early 1982?). But it's late 70's-early 80's.

I think Herron's guess is spot on. It makes total sense to guess the range to be wider than though previously. Catalogs are not necessarily an accurate historical account of when a logo was or wasn't placed on an item. I've seen Ludwig drums with keystone badges on '70s Ludwig catalogs, and it is quite possible that Zildjian used old pictures for their catalog of whatever date they came out. The simple fact is you can't go in a time machine and look. I always thought it was around '76 to '82 or so, but I'm just going by faulty memory. Few drummers out there who bought cymbals for their drums in the 70s have a memory of it with a mind of bringing historical accuracy into 2010.

It's not really that important, this is similar to the discussion about IAKs. If it isn't an EAK who cares?

I agree with you that catalogs can have old pics. But if his dates were spot on, then there would be more pics of open logo Zildjians from the mid 70's. You just don't see them in pics until the late 70's. By contrast you see pics of Paiste logos much earlier. In addition, there would be evidence of models available in the mid 70’s, but discontinued by 1978 with open logos such as min cup crashes and flange hats. But I haven’t seen any. I started drumming in the late 70's. By that time, Zildjian had went to the open logo. I was buying them new in the open log era and when they switched to the solid in 1982.
