1960 MIJ Pearl (Help w/ id-ing wrap?)

Loading...

Hello, everyone.

My name is Edwin and I just started my vintage journey a few months ago. I acquired a '58 Slingerland Radio Kings in Capri Pearl. I'll post them in the media section of the form.

I'm hear to ask a question. I recently bought a kit for my son for Christmas. I am going to start giving him drum lessons and I thought his own kit would be great.

Well. I got him this nice little 60' MIJ Pearl kit.

I've been trying to do all my homework to try and get some info on this wrap since I cannot find anything on the interwebs. I gotten galaxy wrap, oyster wrap, etc. I have even emailed Pearl to see if they knew.

Thanks, guys!

Het Edwin! It's me again, the guy who posted a pic of a Bollero in this finish (with Ludwig front head) on the MIJ FB group. This wrap is simply called "Red Oyster". It looks whiter in the catalogue pic & more grey on shells I guess, because of it's transparency.

He's gonna love this Christmas. Enjoy!

PS: every time I see those Pearl FT feet I am reminded of Mr.Wells

Hey, funkypoodle

Thanks for the information you sent. I got an answer back from pearl and they are saying it could a "red grain pearl" that has faded.

I am inclined to agree w/ you more because it looks more like a oyster to me as well. But can't make it out for sure.

Here is what they sent me. Let me know what you think.

I hate to disagree with Pearl (LOL), but I still think it is Red Oyster.

I'm 99.9% sure Pearl's didn't have stencil badges in 1973. 1969 was the last year of those badges, to the best of my knowledge. So I'm hard pressed to believe it's a red oyster as noted by the 1973 catalog picture posted. What ever it is, it's freaking cool !!!! Your son, it's going to have some fun with those.

Looking for a late 80's to early 90's, preferably Arctic White Pearl MLX 14x14 floor tom.

Here's the colour chart from the 1969 catalogue. Could be Rain Grain Pearl or Red Oyster Pearl. Hard to tell.

Red Grain appears to be the same wrap as Ludwig's Ruby Strata, which when you see it on an entire set doesn't really resemble your drums that much. Of the two I'd go with Red Oyster because of that but it could have been something that didn't make it into a catalog. You have to remember that each batch of those oyster type wraps varied widely so the swatches aren't always accurate. Plus the drum companies made up their own names for the wraps they bought and used so a single wrap might have multiple names or there could be the same name used for more than one wrap.

Regardless that is a very cool looking set and the Rogers tom holder is a definite upgrade.

Over the years, I've seen quite a few MIJ stencil kits wrapped in uncatalogued finishes. Here are some pictures of a no-name kit I had some years ago. The wrap was a very cool "root beer swirl". Never found a catalog from any of the MIJ companies with this wrap.
