Now THAT'S a beautiful drum.
Sorry....is that original or repainted? And what's the finish called?

Those are extra holes, alright, but that strainer looks like the ones that started showing up in late 30s catalogs, see Ludwig snare drum scans on Vintage Drum Guide.
I believe those extra holes are for snare extensions (see pic below). Are there extra holes on the butt plate side also? I have a similar snare from 1950 (stamped 5001), but am currently searching for the correct strainer, as mine requires a slightly different one than yours. My snare extensions are in the mail, coming from Germany. Awesome snare, though! I wouldn't paint it either, if I were you...
This is from the Ludwig Book by Rob Cook:

Here's mine...haven't cleaned it yet, though.

Yep! There sure are. Thanks for digging, Moonlight.
Those extensions sound expensive. Hard to find? Germany?
No worries, Man...the research was already done when I got mine. As for the extensions coming from Germany...another VDF member here had them and is shipping them to me for $60 shipped...not too bad for some uncommon pieces. I'm sure they will make a huge difference in the way the snare sounds since they allow the snare wires to lay flat across the reso head. I would put up a post in the "Wanted" section to see if anyone else has any to sell ya.
