1930s Ludwig Super Sensitive qeury

Loading...

Hi All.

Just new to this forum, although I must say the information from here and also the Vintage Drums site is fantastic.

I recently discovered a Ludwig Super Sensitive snare (6.5 x 14) in my mother in laws garage, so I have taken it upon myself to restore it.

I have ascertained that the snare shell has been refinished at some time (there were some obvious signs...), so I have now stripped it back to its raw mahogany.

One thing though that has got me is that I noticed that on the exterior of the shell is a raised edge of sorts, I have attached a picture to help explain it.

My initial approach was going to have it refinished in a clear lacquer however I am now wondering if this snare originally had a Wrap?

Is anyone able to assist me on this one?

cheers Matthew

I have attached some more photos below of the Badge from the inside, hopefully this is what you are referring too?

I had a deeper look at the inside last night and noticed the Label has been painted over, yet it looks like a signature in faint pencil on the paint covering the label.

It's hard to tell from the pics, but the mahogany shells were often a single ply with re-rings. That being possible, the lap joint appears it was for a wrap. The single ply stained shells have smooth lap joints. However, the grommet looks untouched. Is the badge loose?

Either way, if you are refinishing the drum you will have to remove it. A nice vintage wrap would look beautiful when done. i.e. peacock pearl

Good luck and keep the pics coming!

Your explanation makes sense an it's becoming more obvious that this will be a wrap resto. The Badge is tight with no movement at all.

Now the hunt is on for some vintage wrap, any ideas on where to look?

I will keep taking photos as I go and looking forward to sharing the experience.

I recall seeing some rose pearl on eBay recently. It was pricey though.
