1920's Ludwig 15" X 6.5" Band model help

Loading...

Hello. Newbie here. I'm trying to help my cousin in Italy to get this drum up and playing. He found the above snare drum with some missing parts. He lives in a rural area with no drum shops.

It's a Super-Ludwig in which individual wires can be adjusted.

Several of the snare wires are missing. Several cracked lugs and hoop claws. Missing the batter hoop.

So far I found hooks and tube lugs from Worldmax. I don't know if these lugs will work. They have several lengths available. I'm just not sure if the hole diameter is the same and what length is needed. Similar problem with the hoop. I only can find one 15" 10 lug hoop on the internet, and it's a triple flange. I don't know if the hole spacing will fit exactly on this drum.

As far as snare wires go, It seems Puresound only makes up to 14" for the Vintage Ludwig.

If anyone has gone through this before, I would appreciate any help. My plan is to buy whatever he needs, and ship it over to him so he can get the drum playing.

Thanks

Here is a link to nickel plated brass tube lugs. You’ll want the 3.5” double ended tube lugs for a 6.5” depth drum. The hole spacing will fit the old drums perfectly.

Drumfactorydirect and drummaker both have nickel tension rods and nickel claw hooks as well!

The 15” single-flange hoops you need (also nickel plated brass) will be easier to find on eBay or Reverb. Also check the For Sale section on this site and drumforum.org.

For the wires, if you can’t find the real ones on this site, drumforum.org, eBay, or Reverb, your cousin should reach out to Adrian of AK Drums. He’s in Italy too but he’s not cheap. He’s a master craftsman and makes everything from scratch.

Good luck!

Thanks for your detailed response. I appreciate it.

If we can't find original single flanged hoops for the 15", can he use a modern triple flange hoop with 10 holes ? I don't know if a 10 hole will line up with the lug spacing on those old drums.

I will let him know about Adrian in Italy.

Thanks again.

If you cannot find originals,

Drumfactory has single flange rims, clips and rods.

A pic of this drum would really help.

Good luck sir.

Hi. The 15” 10-hole triple flange hoops will work just fine. Especially while you wait/hunt for vintage single flange ones. The beauty about drums is that they are such a primitive instrument that none of the math/geometry has really changed since back in the day.

Unfortunately, no one is making 15” single flange hoops for snare drums (top hoop and bottom hoop with snare gate). At least, I haven’t found any. I just built a 15x6.5” snare with all vintage 40’s Ludwig & Ludwig / Leedy hardware. I wanted to make it a 10-lug snare and no one ever made double-flange hoops in 15” size with 10 holes. So I decided to make it with 15” single flange hoops. It took me about a year to find 15” nickel-plated brass single flange hoops but I eventually did. They look great.

Another thing to note, the new tube lugs aren’t exactly like the old Leedy/Ludwig/Slingerland tubelugs from back in the day. They kind of have a slight tear drop shape to them where the ball meets the hole mount on each end. Whereas the old ones are more spherical on the ends. It’s hard to describe but you’ll notice it if you compare an old tube lug to a newer one. It’s not a big deal and you won’t notice it unless you’re looking for it. The tube lugs still function the same way and fit the same hole patterns. But if your cousin wants it to be all original, it will take research, time, and patience to find all of the correct hardware.

Leedy and Ludwig used a lot of the same hardware. So expand your searches to look for “Leedy nickel Tube Lugs 3.5in” as well as looking for old Ludwig ones.

Attached is a pic of the snare I built just Just because. Hardware is all nickel over brass, Ludwig/Leedy hardware from the 40’s. The shell is a new made to order 1-ply maple shell. Wrap from precision drum

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I ran across Drumfactory when I was doing a search. They seem to have great prices across the board.

Thanks for the response once again. Yes, I figured he could get some triple flange hoops to use for now as we hunt down some originals. I'm sure if we find them, they'll be $$$$$.

As far as the new lugs, I'm sure he won't mind that they don't look exactly the same, as long as the holes are the same size. I know he doesn't want to drill new holes or enlarge any of the existing ones.

I'm going to place the order for him. I'll be purchasing the hoops, lugs, and claws so he can enjoy the drum while we search for some original parts.

I emailed Adrian a few days ago. Still no response. I want to see if he can possible help him out.

Your custom snare looks fantastic !!!!!!! How does it sound ?

Once again, Thanks for your help.

It's just like this one without the top head underside snares.
