16" deep Ludwig Kick Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

I am thinking about buying a re-wrapped vintage Ludwig kit. The badges are not intact so I can not date the kit. However the Kick is 16" deep which makes me think that is from the 70's. Does anyone know when Ludwig started making 16x22 kick drums?

This was pasted from the Craigslist post.

Up for sale is a really rare find. A vintage, maple Ludwig kit, re-wrapped in stunning Green Glass Glitter. It looks incredible under stage lights, and the sizes of this kit make it a great gigging kit for small or large rooms. All drums feature clear interiors, maple reinforcement rings, and tune with ease. Again, this is a fantastic gigging kit.

16X22 kick (with natural wood hoops)

9X13 rack

13X15 floor 1

14X16 floor 2

Also included it a heavy duty DW stand for the rack rom. Floor toms come complete with legs.

The kit does have some minor issues... The wrap is lifting a little at the seam of the floor toms, but this is an easy fix. There is also a minor tear in the wrap, on the bottom of the kick drum, however, this is not visible when the drum is set up. Also, the rack tom and floor tom leg mounts have been upgraded to more heavy-duty mounts. This is not a kit for a collector, but rather for someone that is going to play it. I've used this kit for smaller club gigs, and it gets compliments from soundmen and audience members everywhere it goes.

If I remember correctly, the power tom and bass sizes came into being around late 1978-early 1979.

Which would indicate a 6 ply kit...no? If it is a 16" bass, there is one of two things wrong here...

1) Mis-Measured

2) A later kit, and why re-rings in a 6 ply shell?

Unless they where leftover stock...then would they not have already been cut to standard 3 ply sizes?

Too many questions here.

I would bet that is a 6 ply bass....ask for interior shots of the drums. That double spur set up on the 16x22 bass wreaks of B/O late 70s early 80s.

In your opinion, is the kit described above worth $650?

In MY opinion...? no. I picked up an unmolested kit of presumably the same era and could not give it away. This looks too wrong. It is my undersatnding that 76 was the last year for 3 ply/ring shells. So to have a 16" deep bass, the machinary was not available until later, hence the shift to the different shells. New compression mahines, new shells. And if they where leftover 3 ply shells, they would not have had the machine to build them that deep at that time. Too many things don't add up.

But then what do I know...I can tell you a 65 Star from a 65 Pearl at a glance...but Ludwig did some strange things at times. This one....I don't know.

Good luck with it. If you have any questions, always take a deep breath and go back to your computer an d ask. And don't forget, it is a rewrap, so that takes away from the original value. Re-wraps always take a hickey.

I would bet that kit sounds good and it don't look that bad. Offer him 500.
