Loading...

Hi All

Could you please help me help someone identify the age and worth of some 15" Zildjian hats he bought back in the 60s here in UK?

Bottom cymbol 840 grams, top 900 grams.

Photos below.

Thanks in advance for your wisdom of enormous magnitude!

Rob :)

Can't see the bottom. But the hat on top looks like a flanged hat.

God, they must sound fantastic.

If it helps any, back in December I bought a pair of 50s A Zildjian 15" hi hats that were a bit lighter for $500 USD and thought they were worth every penny.

No more beards!

It does rather look like a flange. In which case it belongs on the bottom from what I've heard. From memory that's what Zildjian said back in the day, although the cymbal police won't arrest you for preferring them the other way around. I play my flanged 14" on the bottom of the pair. The flange gives a nice "chup" rather than a sharp "chick".

Prices for old As in the UK (I see you are in the UK) tend to be a bit higher than in the USA as best I can tell from years of 602/Sound Creation tracking plus asking all my European friends about used prices for these. I'm not sure if flange hats with the late 50s stamp tend to get a price premium over late 50s stamp hats without a flange. I haven't been tracking prices long enough to have the data in hand. Still building up sample sizes.

Hi all, just an update,

got my hi hats this weekend and they aren't the assumed Flange hats but still very nice, clean small stamp 50s ones that just happen to have a peculiar line in the lathing on the top hat.

Haven't had much time to play them at all but they seem very nice.

Very happy!
