I finally picked up on this project again...cool!. Stripped paint this weekend and it turns out the shell is classic Slingerland three-ply: mahogany-poplar-mahagony. I was hoping for that Excited. Also, there was still date stamp visible! It isn't easy to read, but I've convinced myself it says JAN 1958 - (see pic 2). If thats right, then it dates within a year or two of the other WMP Slingy drums Im pairing this with - Im a happy guy.

I conditioned the inner shell with a coating of Howard Feed-n-wax wood polish and conditioner and its nice and shiny (pic 1). Im currently lightly sanding the outer ply to remove the shiny coating (or stain?) that is on there. Im not sure I need to do that or not since I will re-wrap, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Next step will be to remove the last of the paint from the re-rings, clean and shine up hardware, and find a Slingerland floor tom leg mount. Then on to wrap her up. My first wrap job....im nervous!

Anyone have any tips for removing paint from mounting screws?

Progress is fun!

James

Try Soy Gel stripper, totally eco friendly and won't burn your hands/fingers. I use it to strip layers of lead and latex paints all the time. Shouldn't harm the chrome either. Spendy stuff, about 70 bucks a gallon but I think you can get it in smaller quantities :)
