14"x10 floor tom

Hi. In my quest to build a Slingerland kit out of orphan drums what is the general view on converting a 14X10 snare into a floor tom? My initial thoughts are that it may be too shallow to give the necessary depth of tone needed for a FT. Have any of you out there gone this route?

...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.

I've got a Ludwig 10x14 that was originally a center lug marching snare. I put legs on it to go with a 12x17 and a 8x12. It sounds terrific. I do have a calf batter on it that really brings out the sound I think. Head selection may be a great tool with this size.

Lately I use my 10x14 Slingerland as a FT (on a stand though).. Works fine plenty of depth..

For as much as I was concerned that it might be too small, the sound came out the other way around exactly. For some reason, it sounds bigger than my 12x15s often.

Another factor is shell thickness. Often snare drums are thicker for a louder, sharper, more cutting sound.

If you look at the one in my picture above, those floor tom legs are longer than original. They are made from 3/8 round stock steel. Work great.
