Never played one but I'm getting one cut down soon from an old tom...What do you feel would be the ideal depth for a good all purpose 13" beech wood snare drum...or, do you even like a 13"er?
13" snare drums
I have had several and my favourite was 13 x 6, a good size if you're wanting it to be "all-purpose". I like beech too.

7x13 is a great size. I also have a 6.5x13, but the 7" deep snare is the best, to my ears.

I do like a 13"er, specifically this Pioneer that had an already-compromised shell, which I cut down from 14" to 13". You may have seen the thread. I think the depth is just over 5", an amazing little firecracker that really pops. Looking forward to seeing yours...

I have a Yamaha oak shell snare that is so versatile, I could ALMOST ditch my other snares- from jazz to heavy rock this thing really kicks. I go back and forth between that and my DW for Jazz.
I also have a brass shell piccolo 13 that has that classic piccolo sound to it.
So, for a wood shell, I'd go deeper- 6-1/2 or so. Metal shell I prefer the pop of the 3-4" shell.
That 13" pioneer looks great! Nice job!

I had a 13x6 Baltimore Drum snare some years ago. It was poppy, but had it's application, mostly with jazz size kits.

I just made a 13" x 9" for a friend and it sounds killer. It has such a nice tight pop, you'd think it was a bit shallower. My personal preference for snares is 5" to 6.5" for depth. Never liked my snares super deep.
