A VERY general guess would be that it is a stencil drum made in the Pearl factory and potentially sold through a mail-order catalog. It has the typical luan wood shell with the grain running vertically. Probably sounds just fine -like a snare drum! This one appears to have 8 lugs....Is that correct? 

Yep, 8 lugs, luan shell with wood grain going the wrong way. 

It  sounds pretty good after I put a once piece batter head on it.

I might upgrade to actual snare cord instead of fishing line.

It actually works pretty well.  Over 50 years hitting these things with sticks, it never occurred to me to use fishing line for snare cord.  Definitely better than shoe strings.

I thought maybe it was a guitar string!
