I have gone to Firth 7a's in recent years... Early days I used 2B for practicing and 5B's for playing... Best thing I have ever found for really quiet...

Each of these guys with Tuition videos have done their hard yards with rudiments and exercises... But I do recommend that book (or similar) to anyone...

Semi Gloss or Satin (enamel) spray can.... I cannot recall "Gloss" Black being used on any factory hoops... Gloss will only highlight any imperfection...
