12x22 Bass drum... opinions?

Hi folks,

A newbie here so be easy... getting ready to buy a vintage kit (piece by piece), saw what looks like a nice early 60's maple bass drum' but it's a 12x22, is this a problematic bass drum size for a beginner? (Tuning etc.) I'm looking for a punchy kick drum, not too much boom, was looking for a 14x22 or possibly a 16x22 when I ran across this 12x22... would love some feedback.

Thanks

Not at all you should have smiles for miles with this depth.

I have a couple of 12x22's. They sound great, better than the deeper (over 16" deep)drums in my opinion.

What brand is it ?..The only company i know of that made that depth was Ludwig, with their New Yorker outfit, which came with only a tom and snare, no floor..But i have heard that other drum companies had this depth as well..If it's a Ludwig, or any other, than you shouldn't have a problem with tuning or sound..They sound just as good as any 22x14 or 22x16..

Just got my first Ludwig 12x22. Looking forward to getting up and running. Have heard nothing but good things about this size bass drum.

You'll get more punch with less muffling due to the shallow depth. I've got a 12x20 Slingerland which is great!

12 x 22 is a great size.
Can't recommend buying a vintage set piece by piece. Try to get a complete, same era set without mods or extra holes. You'll save money in the long run and have a much better time selling it when (and you will) decide to get a different set.

The 12X22" bass drum I recently cut down from 25" is the best sounding bass drum I've had.

My 1960 10 lug 12"x22" Slingerland sounds great. 3 ply, light, nice deep punch.
I do use a bass drum ancor though.
