The Band That Wasn't The Beatles
 

I found this video of a band called Klaatu. Anybody remember them? Way back in the mid 70's, there was a rumour going around that they were The Beatles reunited, turns out they were a band from Canada.
Anyway, it looks like the drummer is playing a Rogers kit in a wmp finish.

Yes very Fab four/Liverpool sound... they were good players & it was a good mix for back then,,, Both tracks are on the A side of the LP that I have ...

They were excellent musicians, the drummer (Terry Draper), co-wrote their songs and sang lead at the beginning of Calling Occupants. They recorded their first album in the same studio as Rush and became good friends with them. The whole Beatle rumour was started by a journalist named Steve Smith, but was later disproven by a program director, Dwight Douglas, when he checked the records from the US copywrite office and uncovered the bands real names.

Not to argue with anyone, but I think it's easier to sound like some other band after the fact. They definitely were not the innovators that The Beatles were, but since the Beatles already existed and were still a commodity, other bands certainly could tap into their sound and mimic it.
I remember when John Bonham died, people said that there will never be another like him...and they were right...but there sure are a lot of people that have studied his sound, play the same drums tuned the same way and can transcribe/play what Bonham played.

This happens all the time in the jazz world....Someone like, say, Jaco Pastorius shows up out of nowhere, pulls all the fret wire off a beat up P bass and turns everyone on their ears....A few years later, everyone has fretless basses and sounds like Jaco and can play every Jaco solo ever played....but, again, it's all AFTER the real innovation has taken place. Mimicry is different from creativity.

If they were just another Beatles tribute band then I'd agree with you, but they weren't. They wrote their own music and ya, obviously they were influenced by The Beatles and The Beatles were influenced by many American artist of the 50's. It's easy to copy someone, but it's another story to write good original music no matter who influenced you.
I believe when all this was going on the were in London recording there second album with contributions from the London Symphony Orchestra. It's a great album.

Well......To each his own...I don't think they would exist without the Beatles having existed before them. Whether they wrote "original" music or not, it was obviously based on (not just influenced by) The Beatles. Would they have done anything otherwise? Maybe. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Yeah, they sound good. But if I want that sound, do I buy their album? Or, do I buy Sergeant Pepper's? Hmmmmm.....

I don't believe a lot of bands would be here if The Beatles never existed, in fact, music, specifically rock music wouldn't be the same. But lucky for us they did exist and changed everything.Yes Sir

America's Beatles were The Beach Boys ...and The Beach Boys' "Sergeant Pepper's" was "Pet Sounds".
