Turning concert toms into closed toms

Loading...

The lugs on a concert tom are installed further from the edge of the shells than regular tom lugs.

I think that may be a simple optical illusion due to the difference in lugs... well, for Ludwig anyways (not sure of the Tama, but looks like Ludwig was using the same drilling jig for their toms). See the attached photo.

The camera wasn't 100% perpendicular to the drums so the measurement may seem off visually just a bit. I didn't want to pull the reso head off the other drum to measure the inside, but visually those holes are in the same spot.

Left drum = concert/melodic tom

Right drum = double headed tom

I've been suspiciously quiet after my initial guffaw. If you were to search this forum, you would find several threads on concert Tom conversions. Some are cool with it, some aren't. It's really no big deal. You should probably understand that these drums carry deep passions with them. At times, that passion can get in the way of good conversation. These guys are two of the best to ever write upon these pages. Your grace and patience will pay off. I'm sure if you do some introspection, you will discover a time or two when you led with passion. We all have. For the record, I agree with them. But, that matters not. You do with your drums whatever you wish. It's a good forum. Continue with us and allow your "inquire" to become "inspire".

My guess is Luddy-dude is somehow related to that Ludwig family ... somehow. No one knows the level of detail that he posseses without being hooked in to the family somewhere. He's like that strange cousin or odd uncle or something that they don't discuss. Dang. Is there no end to his freekin' Ludwig information?

No Michael, I'm not related in anyway to the Ludwig family......just a longtime owner/restorer, nothing more. :p

Not for nothing hoppy but neither of those tension rods are in centerline with the cast lugs. Why do you have that kind of play in them ?? That`s potential rattle dattle noise !! Are the hoops correct for the drums ??

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
