Nope....14x26's. The double sets of Rogers spurs give the illusion of a drum more shallow than it actually is.

Guitar Center in Totowa N.J. has one for sale in great condition.

I was amazed because i never seen one before in person or in the old Ludwig catalogs.

Nice topic, Ludwig-dude, although I think there was no association whatsoever with the Black Panther political party and the naming of the Ludwig finish Black panther. Some citrus mods have indeed been found with the black panther finish on them, but many, many more black panther drums are out there without another finish. They probably just were faced with the orders for the Black panther drums and looking at the citrus drums that were collecting dust and just put the black panther wrap on them and sent them on their way.

Black panther is a fairly common color and it is very durable. It definitely looks great on the drums when cleaned up--it's a low-maintenance color--and I like the contrast with the chrome hardware.

It may have been common 40 yrs ago, but you will rarely see any black panther on ebay. I have a saved search on ebay and rarely see one. See if you can find a black panther snare. I bet you cant! LOL

I found one once on Ebay, it was a 15" concert snare.....and yes, I got outbid on it. I believe one of our own here on the forum currently owns it?

Actually, it is a very rare color these days. You do see more of these pop up than the mod colors, but they are rare. As far as low maintenance.....I'm not so sure you've owned a set before. I've owned two different kits, one in Jazzette sizes that I regrettably sold many years ago, and one in Hollywood sizes that I sold at the same time as the Jazzette, but was able to repurchase a few years ago, and those were far from low maintenance. You have to be ver carefull about scratches and gouges, it does both very easily. Also, they seem to collect dust easier in the grain pattern that a regular wrap finish. So there is constant cleaning required. As I said, far from low maintenance.

And as far as the Black Panther Party association......it was speculation on my part, but it fits with the times, much like the mod and psychadelic colors did.

Makes sense to me. It appears that Ludwig was being very creative in keeping up with the trends of those days. it was the black Oyster pearl that catapulted Ludwig to its business explosion, after Ringo bought a set and started playing them. Everyone had to have a Ludwig kit. I guess ludwig had plenty of money to experiment on new fads and ideas. They covered up the mod orange with BP wrap cause they weren't selling. How ironic, for one of the worst selling wraps back then to be so sought after now. It's so cool for retro trends to become so popular again.
