Leather !!

Ok, here`s my idea,

I`m thinking about wrapping my 76 Phonics in leather, (real hide, not that split stuff they make boots out of) I don`t know much about value and acustics, I just play them. I got a few questions and I`d like some input on from the guys here, cuz some of you are quite knowlageable and expierienced.

Because they would be stitched/shrunk on tight, (no adhesives) would they still retain their vintage value if I had to get slighty longer screws (stainless steel), or should I save the old ones for future restore ?

Is this gonna change alot the way they sound now ??

Has anyone ever seen or heard of this being done ???

I`m gonna put rose paper on the back of the leather to protect the origonal finish and I`m just wondering what you guys think !! Any warnings or advice would be greatly appreachiated !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Yes, wrapping the shells will affect the resonance of the drums. Exactly how much would you notice, I'm not to sure, but it will limit how much the shells will vibrate.

If I were you and was going to try this, I definitely would keep all the original hardware for later resale of the kit. As for value, I'm not to sure if wrapping shells in leather would add $$ to the kit. I believe that a kit should be left as original as possible. I understand that you are not tampering with the original wrap and could remove it at a later time. I guess one can only learn from experimentation.

Good luck with this! Please keep in mind, this is only my opinion.

Cheers

Between you, me, and the lamp post ... that leather will KILL the res. Slingerland actually sold kits wrapped in pleather and denim and all other sorts of stuff. Those thicker material wraps killed the tone.

Oddball. Hmm. That's fitting (more so, than leather on shells). Have you considered something like this.........

Leather may be cool and all but very costly and not practical. Especialy if it hinders the tone/resonance too much. Those fuzzy ones, I can picture the babes just coming up to touch them...
