Need help with vintage Premier Drums

Loading...

Hello all,

I recently picked up these vintage Premier drums at a garage sale. I was told by the seller that they belonged to Glen Kithcart of the band Touch. With the help of the reference material available at this site, I've been able to determine that they're from the 70's - early 80's with poly chromatic red finish.

Is there a model name?

I could not find a reference for the small 8 x 9 & 1/4 tom. Is it rare?

I'm not a drummer (casual guitarist, at best :o) and I do intend on listing these for sale. Any help on value would be greatly appreciated, as well as advice on anything I should note to potential buyers.

More pictures of the drum heads and shell are available at

Hi. Strange one this, as those lugs look to be Beverley lugs of the same era. Beverley drums have close connections with Premier (Inverted 'p' Beverley logo) and the shells are pretty much identical, of the three ply birch variety at least. It could be that some Beverley lugs went on a Premier badged hit. So as for the model, it's difficult to determine because of this.

Tama Superstar, 22, 22, 16, 14, 13 Desert Burst
Premier Genista, 22, 16, 13, 12 Black Lacquer
Premier Genista, 20, 14, 10 and snare Black Lacquer
Premier Resonator 22, 16, 14, 13 poly creme/black
Zickos 22, 16, 14, 13, clear acrylic and snare

Hello, thanks for the help. This snare drum seems pretty similar to the drums I have. The seller refers to the lugs as "Premier/Beverley". Maybe this was fairly common for Premier drums of a certain vintage?

Possibly so! As I said, they were close cousins!

I'd say it was rarer to have a small tom on standard kits then, but not sure.

Premier sets have more value in the US, but there are loads over here in the UK - they were built to last!

Perhaps your set would have value to a collector, because of the Beverley lugs and premier badges?

The "concert" drum lugs do not look like my 60's Berverly lugs at all but the other drums look very close. Very interesting......

During the 70s, both Beverley and Premier drums were made in the Premier factory. These drums were badged as Beverley in the UK and many other territories, but in the USA they badged Premier and marketed as the 8000 series.

I am feeling woozy here, is it a trick question?

To me these are painfully obviously premier projectors aren't they?

When b&h beverley were done, premier just used the same lugs and rebadged them projector (8000 in USA), alongside resonator, right?

Help!

No.

Although that is the common misconception.

Beverley Drums ceased to be in 1979. The Projector range of Premier drums didn't appear until 1985 using only the larger Beverley bass drum lugs on all the drums, the smaller tom lugs (and snare lugs) were never used again. these were ultimately replaced by 1989 by the more well known Premier hi-ten lugs.

Ok boss, thanks. But can I ask if you know how the bass lugs fitted on the toms? I would have thought that they would be too tall, you know - meaning the bolts not being parallel with the shell. Did they have a different insert or something?
