Ajax Snare Drum

Loading...

Hi there

can any one help me, some years ago I was given a broken Ajax snare drum dating I beleive from the early to mid sixties.

The shell was beyond saving having been splintered by a hefty blow, but i carefully retained the lugs and rims and snare strainer with the idea of building myself a new shell using and re- using the original parts . unfortunately having built a shell with which I am happy, I find that the snare strainer, and fixing screws for the lugs have disappeared over the last few years. what i need to know is:-

A. will it be possible to locate a period strainer to replace the original, and thus keep as much as possible the look of the original.

B. what size and thread are the screws that hold the lugs in place I have tried all of the odd screws that I have and none seems to fit, I have good contacts in the engineering industry so could probably get hold of most screws if someone could Identify the correct size.

Thanks Henry Piper

Might be a lot to pay for a few screws but this might get you started.

Come to think of it it might be worth asking this seller if he just has the screws. He has bought and sold a lot of English Rogers sets in his time which are probably the same screws. He may even have the strainer. He is a good guy, I have bought from him in the past.

Building your own shell is quite impressive!

Thanks for the info, will look into it.

As for the shell, it took many attempts and used up a hell of a lot of Birch and Mahogany veneers, The test will be what it sounds Like when its finished, ive enjoyed doing it,and will do more who knows one day I might produce the perfect drum!!!! ;);)

I can send you a genuine screw if you give me the address.

i've checked all of the Ajax lugs that i have and there are 3 different screw heads and 2 different threads. if it has a Phillips head(either round or half round/bevelled it may be B.S.F. but the slot head round incarnation seems to be 9/64 x 32 t.p.i. small threads like this are often close enough, that you can run a tap through them and change them slightly to freely accept another close thread.
