P83 strainer trouble

Loading...

i'm trying to do something with my WFL snare. it's a nice old mahogany shell with maple reinforcing rings. a players snare, nickel plating and some hoodoo-voodoo duco finish that some dude sprayed on.

i'm not sure yet what to do with the finish; maybe sand it down to see what's under the duco?

anyway, for the moment i want to get it work properly. and here's the problem:

it has a p83 strainer that loosens after i start having fun on that skin!

i'm not a hardware wizard, don't know if there's some trick to beat the p83-system. Help2

thought about getting a nickel works strainer or something similar. but the shell has no extra holes and i hate to drill some. on the other side i like the looks of that old p83.

any ideas?

One thing you might try is a single drop of light-duty thread locking liquid (such as Lock-tite). Set up your P-83 exactly where you like it. Apply a drop of the light duty thread locking liquid to the threads. Work the tension adjustment knob back and forth a few turns in either direction while the thread locker dries.

You MUST use the light-duty liquid ONLY! Anything heavier and you won't be able to turn the adjuster at all! It will be frozen in place!

You might find the result of using the light-duty stuff to be that the adjustment knob is harder to turn than you like, but it will be the easiest, quickest and most reversible fix in a pinch.

could you post a pic of the drum shell the paint could be original. also you can make a metal adaptor plate to fit the Nickel works strainer as not to drill any extra holes in the shell, and explain what you mean about the p-83 is it loosening while your playing?

Do you mean that the strainer (tension) screw is actually turning to loosen the snares, or the throw-off lever is releasing? I assume you have checked that the snare cord (or strap) is not stretching or just slipping out of the butt plate. I've never had my P-83 "loosen" the snares.

well, initially i thought it is the strainer tension screw that get's loose, but i never thought about the two other options you mentioned -

snare cord could stretch

check butt plate

(anyway it's not the throw-off lever that is releasing. that one stays real tight in place)

will check this. the thread locking liquid seems to be a fast way to beat the system! i guess it can be very helpful in some situations.

thanks a lot for your help so far. got to rush to work now.

i'll try to post a picture later.

I've had problems with snare cord stretching; specifically cheap Gibraltar cord. Get some Ludwig cord.

close up on the badge

this finish does not look original to me. there are traces what appears to me of sandpaper around the badge. don't think WFL did paint job's that were that bad.

that's why i thought of sanding the shell and maybe just wax it.
