Another Vintage K Zildjian timeline question/help!!

Loading...

Hi all,

New to the forum and would appreciate some help with identifying the year of manufacture if possible for a 20" K crash ride to be sure. I guessed 59-63 but could be off!

Many thanks

If someone would PM me I can send picture via e-mail as I am having problems I think with upload!

Your cymbal is actually quite a bit older than you thought. This is an old stamp.

A type IIb to be exact which means late 1940's.

The stamp looks very clear and sharp with little wear. The patina looks light as if the cymbal was stored for most of the past several decades. I wonder how it sounds.

Many thanks for the enormous help guys. It is actually my father's who has had it a long long time and he is listing it for sale so I wanted to avoid any mistakes about it.

Thank you.

I assume you mean on eBay. Do you know when? Are there any soundfiles available?

Hi Mark. I am not sure whether eBay is the best place. Perhaps some advice would be forthcoming from you or other members here. I don't have a sound file but could you describe what kind of sound is sought after from the late 40's batch or is it entirely subjective?

Many thanks

To a great degree its subjective. I could describe what appeals to me and you might think the cymbal has those exact attributes and in the end I could fine the cymbal woefully unappealing. I would rather leave the description to someone like Drumaholic since he is more attuned to the subtleties and expectations for the different periods. In general I look for a medium thin to thin cymbal, on the dark side, with a nice well defined woody stick sound, a nice deep wash with some trash that doesn't overwhelm the sticking. Those attributes could fit most old Ks as well as a number of other cymbals. But even a cymbal with all those attributes might not sound pleasing to me.
