Info on cleaning cymbals from Zildjian

Loading...

Looking at the Vintage cymbal guide, I saw that they posted a flyer from Zildjian where they mentioned how to clean Zildjian cymbals. I was surprised to see that they listed using Comet, Copper Bright, Samae, or any popular brass or copper household cleanser. Here's the link:

I know they weren't talking about cleaning vintage cymbals, but I did find it strange/funny that they were so vauge in what to use.

Yes I remember back in the late 60's reading a Zildjian blurb in Down Beat about cleaning cymbals. They said to make a paste from common cleanser and gently move it thru the lathing.Call me nuts but I've been doing that very thing for 42 years now.I'm still playing my ' 68 20 inch ride and others from those days.No you don't grind them with vulcanic pumis, just get the stick chunks out.Go easy.

The nw cymbals have a coating on them and you can't use cleansers like that. Bar keepers fiend is the one I use on my vintage cymbals. I only clean them about every 10 -15 years.

I've seen some of the casualties of household cleaners being used on cymbals...it's not pretty! Whenever I get an old Zildjian or Paiste covered in red or brown splotches and swipe marks I wonder what chemical was used on it.

There you go thinking like an executive again....LOL

I think Drumaholic last year said something to the effect of Zildjian referring to cymbals as "units" in response to a question he had asked them.
