60s Zildjians

Back to cymbals.......

my take on it is:

Paiste cymbals seem to like to be kept clean.....done with Paiste cleaner in the ORANGE bottle,of course! They even have that wax finish on the top to keep them looking shiny.......

Zildjian cymbals do not seem to want to be cleaned.........more of the au natural look.........no wax coating from the factory.......

Standard A. and K Zildjians have a thin, water based polyurethane coating on them. K Customs, K Constantinoples, Armands and all Brilliant finished Zildjians do not have the coating.

Hmmm. That's probably one of the reasons I can't stand the sound of new As and Ks. Kcons are another story. I have 3 22" kcons and a pair of Kcon hats. Love 'em all. The current crop of A's sound ultra bright, pingy and strident to my ears. They mostly remind me of Sabian B8's with slightly better tone. Moist new K's are,... well they're just boring to my ears. Other then the Kcons, a number of Bosphorus cymbals, one Istanbul, and a Sabian medium thin Artisan, all our cymbals are either old K's or old A's. The A's are all late '40's thru '60's

What year did they start putting the poly on cymbals?

1982 for A. Zildjians. The initial coating was heavier oil based poly. That coating would last for years. In the late 80's they switched to the water based poly due to environmental constraints. It's very mild and is only designed to keep it finger print free for a short time on the store floor.

Good for you on snagging another wonderful kit. I love some of your stuff. Very cool. The cymbals can be cleaned with a good soap and water treatment in the tub or deep sink. Put your back into it and they will look pretty good.Barring that, you could go the rough route. There's Brasso, Neverdull, and several other chemical abrasives. They will make them shine like new, if that's what you're after.Good luck and post some pics of the kit.

Here ya go, mcjnic!

Of course, I didn't add the cymbal L-arm, cymbals or any other "goodies."

Plus, I doubt I'd get much use out of these set up in a kitchen!

Stunning. Everything about that kit says "class". Nice job.

OldSchool Your SBP set is absolutely gorgeous!

I think vintage instruments look best and play closer to original when cleaned and maintained.

Nice job! Bowing

BTW Moniker has nothing to do with my drumming!
