Ludwig Rocker 80's

Loading...

I was looking at a set the other day, which I almost bought, but when I looked at the shells they looked like some sort of composite, or pressed particle board, honestly, I never saw shells like these, they looked cheap, maybe someone here can enlighten me as to what they used on early rocker sets, I thought these were high end drums. thoughts.?

Depends what year they are from. Early Rockers had a Granitone finish inside. Later ones had a clear finish and sound just as good...

Rockers were not Ludwig's high-end models. They basically took the place of the Standard model, intermediate-level drums. Depending on the whims of the market on any given day, Standards can fetch collector prices now, and maybe someday the Rockers will too. But from what I have seen, you can get Rockers at bargain prices at this time. Did they move to offshore content with the Rockers?

Actually the very early "Rockers" replaced the Standard as the entry level kit, but from 1985 to 1988 they had Classic lugs and had a maple interior. 4-ply. Ludwig's interior coating was called "Lud-Cote" for the Rocker and was a brownish color. There are some with the "Granitone" out there too.

granitone was a grey and black speckled paint product sprayed into the interiors, and had a rough texture, they used it on top of the line Luds 1972 thru 1976 approx, then on some later rockers, the tan or brown coating was used on rocker 2's which were a less expensive version of the rockers, late 80's early 90's or thereabout I think. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/ludwig_rockers/1988-LUDWIG2.jpg

Ludwig did use the grey speckled paint on early 70's drums but that was paint over a maple shell. I think the later 80's rockers had the shell completely made up from the speckled material. Those were crap! I had two bass drums that I bought new in 1988 and they had that speckled inteior. They sounded awful and were very cheap!

The early 80's rockers had a maple shell and actually looked pretty nice.

1984 Catalog, Not listed as Rockers, but were an entry level like the Standard. Black/White badge with Classic hardware in the top picture, Standard hardware on the bottom. As I posted earlier, these are solid shells and sound good, outer ply of maple. The one I have is just like the top pic, but black in color. The snare is a 5 x 14 COW, but is the same type of shell as a JazzFest.

We're brothers in drums eames.....Now if I told you what I paid for them and what I got, jealousy might ensue. ;)

p.s.-BBK works and it's easier to type. :)
